Moscow to Beijing, via Mongolia

For guests with limited time and wanting to focus on the train journey following the Trans-Mongolian route. Departing Moscow on Tuesdays, train #4 travels more than 7,600km, with passengers spending six nights on board. Alternatively, guests may wish to depart Beijing on Saturdays on #20, travelling via the Manchurian line (bypassing Mongolia) and spending seven nights on board.

Day 2 – Tuesday
Moscow city tour and departure
Enjoy a guided orientation tour of Moscow.
The Moscow guides have their own personal touch, while of course visiting the main sites and introducing you to the diversity of Moscow’s architectural styles from Russian-Moscow Baroque and Art Nouveau to the Pseudo-Chinese and Moorish influences. The three-hour walking tour generally includes: Tverskaya street and it’s important buildings, Manezhnaya square, Marshal Zhukov monument, Lubyanka (former KGB building), Aleksandrovsky Gardens and of course the Red Square, St. Basil Cathedral and the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour.
Free afternoon in Moscow before evening transfer to station. Depart Moscow on train #4 close to midnight. (B)
Passing Vladimir and Nizhny Novgorod during the early morning, and Perm later in the evening.
On train crossing the geographic divide between Europe and Asia
Passing Ekaterinburg in the early hours of the night and the Ural Mountains, the geographic border between Europe and Asia. Continue on, passing the major cities of Omsk and Novosibirsk.
On train across Siberia
Passing through Krasnoyarsk in the early afternoon, the train traverses the ‘mid-Siberian railway’, built between 1893 and 1898, before crossing the great rivers Ob and the Yenisei, and winding through the Sayan Mountains.
On train passing Lake Baikal
The train passes the ‘capital’ of Siberia, Irkutsk, in the early morning. Irkutsk is an important junction on the Trans-Siberian network, and the gateway to the majestic environs of Lake Baikal. The train travels on via the south shore of Lake Baikal, passing Ulan-Ude before reaching the Russian – Mongolian border in the evening.
On train through Mongolia
Traversing the northern open steppe plains of Mongolia, the train reaches the capital city, Ulaanbaatar, in the early morning. Travel through the Gobi desert before crossing the Mongolian – Chinese border in the late evening. The Mongolian – Chinese border takes around five hours for immigration and customs procedures and for changing the bogies to accommodate the different gauge railway lines between the Trans-Mongolian / Siberian network and the train tracks in China.
From the border down of Erlian, the train travels through the Yanshan mountains in the north of China, passing sections of the Great Wall. Turning easterly, the train makes the approach into Beijing, arriving around 14:35. Meet driver at station exit and transfer to a centrally located 3* hotel, staying two nights.

Guided city sightseeing tour, including: The Temple of Heaven, Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City and Houhai Hutongs (incl. lunch). (B|L)
