Moscow to Beijingvia the Trans-Mongolian Railway
Moscow to Beijing by train
Traveling west to east by train from Moscow to Beijing lends a definite European feel to the beginning of the trip. Begin in Moscow, adding extra nights as you wish, or extend the adventure with a couple of nights in Saint Petersburg. The Trans-Mongolian route is certainly the more popular route, and arguably the more scenic and diverse, with most guests choosing to stop in Irkutsk / Lake Baikal and Mongolia.
For a really rich experience of Russia, load up with stopovers throughout the journey, choosing from any of the following destinations: Vladimir / Suzdal, Kazan, Ekaterinburg, Krasnoyarsk, Irkutsk / Lake Baikal or Ulan-Ude. A couple of days by the shore of Lake Baikal in the heart of Siberia, and on the open steppe in Mongolia, offer unlimited adventure as well as a more relaxed atmosphere between the boisterous scene of Moscow and Beijing. Alternatively, travellers can continue on from Irkutsk (or Ulan-Ude) directly to Beijing via the Trans-Manchurian line, effectively bypassing Mongolia.
Reaching Beijing, home to more than 20 million people, travellers are most often surprised and enchanted by this schizophrenic city showcasing a mix of modern and ancient charm. Save time for at least a couple of days for this fabulous megalopolis.
Be sure to check out the various tour programs in the various destinations to create the perfect mix of adventure and cultural highlights, extending or trimming the stopovers to suit your time frame, budget and travel interests. And of course, feel free to add on extra nights and tour programs in Beijing. Most train journeys can be upgraded to first class, two people in a sleeper cabin.
